In early 2008, a group of passionate parents, teachers and community leaders gathered together to discuss their hopes and dreams for a charter school for downtown San Diego. The concept for this school is to provide innovative learning opportunities for students fully utilizing the vast resources of the downtown San Diego urban landscape, a school where community service would be valued and fostered. We had a dream of teaching children through urban discovery.
By February 29, 2008, Urban Discovery Academy filed its charter petition with San Diego Unified School District. We have assembled a strong team – on the board of trustees, in our retained professionals, in our teaching faculty, and in our parent body. We also have many talented supporters from the community at large upon whom we can draw expertise.
We are excited and forever grateful to San Diego Unified School District for granting our petition. We believe that all children can grow and thrive in our classrooms through urban discovery. The school, now in its ninth year of operation, has classrooms that are full with a wait list for every grade! With API test scores in the high 800s, UDA is a model charter school, fiscally sound, and has a great reputation with the school district and the charter community.
