Yanitza was born and raised in San Diego. She grew up in a Hispanic household and is bilingual in English and Spanish. Yanitza attended San Diego State University where she earned a degree in Psychology with a minor in counseling and social change. She earned her teaching credential at Point Loma Nazarene University. During her free time she volunteers daily at a nonprofit that strives to empower underserved communities across the world through medicine and mental health. These experiences have influenced her classroom as she strives to model to the students what kindness and compassion looks like. She enjoys spending time outdoors, running, and reading. She is driven to work at Urban Discovery Schools where students are allowed a genuine educational experience through Design Thinking; in her classroom, students help guide the curriculum based on their own curiosity, exploration, and collaboration with professionals, their classmates, and teachers.
