About Me

My name is Emily Pehl, also known as Ms. Pehl (pronounced Peel). This will be my third year with Urban Discovery Academy and I am so excited for another great year ahead. I started at UDA as a fifth grade long term substitute and eventually finished the year out as the new permanent fifth grade teacher. Although I loved the experience I gained in upper elementary school, I knew that I was meant to be working with younger students. Last year, I was able to transition down to the primary grades as a first grade teacher. It was everything I hoped for and more!

I was born and raised here in beautiful San Diego. I received my Bachelor of Arts in liberal studies, with a concentration in psychology, as well as a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, from the University of San Diego. Through my educational experience, I was introduced to UDA and instantly fell in love with the school's mission and community. I believe that project-based learning is ideal for a genuine educational experience in which students help guide the curriculum based on their own curiosity, exploration, and collaboration with professionals, their classmates, and teachers.

When I'm not in my classroom, I enjoy being outdoors, hiking or running, as well as spending time with friends and family, and reading. This summer I completed my first half-marathon. Although it was mentally and physically exhausting, I am able to say I did it. Last year, I had the encouragement from my students and was even wished good luck on one of my "Jog-a-thons" (also known as a 5k). Most weekends I start my mornings with a walk with my mom or sister, with a coffee in hand. I also love animals and I have a cat named Honey.

I am excited to start the new school year, and to get to know my fabulous students and families. Please feel free to reach out with any questions, concerns, or information you would like me to know about you and your child.

Hope you all enjoyed your summer!
