Urban Discovery Schools to Require COVID-19 Vaccination for Students 12 and Older
Local charter system is the first public school in San Diego County to require the vaccine for students and demonstrates ability to implement data-driven decisions effectively to support students and families
San Diego, September 22, 2021 – In an effort to continue to support the well-being of students and families of Urban Discovery Schools (UDS), a California charter public school in Downtown San Diego, the Board of Trustees (Board) of UDS recently adopted a resolution adding the COVID-19 vaccination for eligible students 12 and older to the list of vaccinations already required to attend UDS.
With this decision, UDS is the first public school system in San Diego County to institute the requirement for students 12 and older.
“In passing this resolution, we are demonstrating our steadfast belief that this additional vaccination requirement is in the best interest of student health, well-being, and learning,” said Shawn T. Loescher, EdD, Chief Executive Officer at UDS. “Throughout this pandemic, we have demonstrated resilience, innovation, and a focus on what is best for children. This decision is based on science and is the result of coordination and consultation with public health experts in the County of San Diego’s Health and Human Services Agency.”
Over the next several weeks, Loescher will host a series of online UDS Learning Community Meetings to engage and support families. These forums for parents, guardians, and students will be designed to provide scientific-based rationale for adding the COVID-19 vaccination, present the timeline for implementation over the next 60 days, and discuss what supports will be added for families.
“The decision by UDS demonstrates the flexibility, independence and agility to do what California’s charter public schools are designed to do – respond to and support the needs of their local school community” said Kamaal Martin, Director of Local Advocacy for the California Charter Schools Association. “Built on the belief that kids come first, California charter public schools like UDS are able to adapt quickly and implement policies to support the students and families they serve.”
This recent Board resolution passed on September 17, follows an earlier requirement for faculty and staff to receive the COVID-19 vaccination. Like staff and faculty, a medical exemption process will be established for students. This resolution also leaves in place all the previously adopted options for families to engage in independent study contracts and remain part of the UDS learning community.
